I spent years trying every alternative practitioner. Then I became a naturopathic doctor. Here’s what I learned along the way.
January 30th: Beyond the White Coat: Katy’s Field Guide to Alternative Practitioners
I’ve been to a naturopath, a homeopath, a functional doc, two chiropractors, a German New Medicine therapist, an energy healer, and a woman who did something with tuning forks.
Some of it changed my life.
Some of it was expensive wishful thinking.
And honestly? Sometimes I still can’t tell which was which.
Here’s what I have figured out after years of chasing every rabbit trail outside conventional medicine:
→ There ARE practitioners who can help you in ways your PCP never will
→ There are people who will take your money and not care when nothing improves
→ The difference between them isn’t always obvious until you’ve already spent $500
→ Your insurance might cover more than you think (if you know what to call it)
→ Your HSA covers even more (like, WAY more)
→ You can explore all of this without becoming the person nobody wants to sit next to at dinner
So, on January 30th at noon ET, I’m hosting a workshop called:
Beyond the White Coat: Katy’s Field Guide to Alternative Practitioners
This is the workshop I wish existed before I handed over my credit card to someone whose credentials I didn’t understand.
It’s all about:
What all these people actually do. Naturopath vs homeopath vs osteopath. Functional medicine vs German New Medicine vs New Biology. Health coaches, bodyworkers, nutritional counselors, dissident docs. Who can diagnose. Who can prescribe. And everything in between.
How to spot the good ones. Green flags. Red flags. Questions to ask before you book. When your gut feeling that something’s off is actually right (even if they have 700 five-star reviews).
The money piece. What insurance covers. What your HSA covers. How much you should actually be paying. When someone’s just gouging you because you’re desperate.
Does it work? The role of placebo, belief, and ritual in healing. When alternative approaches outperform conventional. When they’re about the same. When you’re lighting money on fire.
How to stay sane. Building a team of practitioners who don’t all hate each other. What to do when your alternative person contradicts your conventional doctor. When to stop searching and start living.
This will save you years of expensive trial and error. I already did it for you.

I’m an emergency medicine PA and still struggle to navigate the alternative medicine space. I am really looking forward to learning more. Thanks for doing this, Katy.
I’ve spent many years navigating this space as well. I’m a Reiki II practitioner myself and about to attune to Reiki Master. There are good, bad and ugly in both traditional and alternative medicine. The challenge with alternative medicine is that there are very few standards, so you aren’t judging from a neutral starting point. I started my Reiki journey with Level I in 2020, then Level II in 2022. I’ve spent years studying, contemplating and growing to finally feel like it’s time to become a Reiki Master. My teacher has decades of experience and is very committed to detailed training, honoring the practice. Conversely, there are Reiki Masters that went from no experience to master in a two-day course with a teacher who didn’t have much experience themselves. So much of it is about finding quality humans to connect with. Excited to hear what you have to say in your webinar!
