What a timely article Katy ! Literally this morning my X feed is full of tweets from Mark Cuban calling for repeal and replace of ACA and Punchbowl emailed me to make sure I knew that Thune was screwing it up. Learning lessons from people who’ve gone before you is one of the surest, most effective life hacks we can put into place. I hope the right people see this at the right time.

Personally not into the ACA repeal (feel it was needed at the time)- but I do believe in listening to all sides, on balance!

I appreciate being able to see behind the scenes and some inside-baseball on this stuff.

Ultimately, whether you’re on mom’s side or dad’s side - I think everyone wants a better healthcare reform. While we may not agree on how to do that, we should stick together to do what's best for the kids.

Good storytelling - always good to hear behind the scenes!

Good Article. You hit the nail on the head. The Republicans and the administration did not have a viable replacement for the ACA. The "replace bucket" was empty plus it had a massive hole in the bottom. There were some very smart folks like yourself who the President should have leaned on more. Tom Price and Jared Kushner were not those people. I fondly remember the image of John McCain with the thumbs down gesture on the floor of the Senate. The look on McConnell's face was priceless, like someone shot his puppy. It averted a disaster of a replacement. You are 100% right on transparency. We need to do better.

Thanks so much David! The sad thing is that he DID lean on me and other good people in his team. We led him astray. I hope the current team learns from our PTSD!!!

The goal of healthcare reform should be to 1- reduce costs and 2 - decouple employment and health insurance access.

The Republicans will hit gold when they figure that out. Not doing those two things AT THE SAME TIME will result in failure.

What an insightful story! I'm intrigued by Tony LoSasso's proposal for replacing the ACA

Thank you so much Vivian! I like Tony's proposal as well - that has been what I have been pushing when asked. It also helps that it's what the president has been posting on social media. The addition I would make to Tony's proposal would be that people could use the account to buy off-exchange plans, short-term plans, Health Care Sharing Ministry membership, DPC membership or nothing and just use it for regular out-of-pocket qualified medical expenses.
